Concept

For this project, I reimagined a local business’s logo using literal yet integrated representations of its three foundational pillars: restaurant, arts, and community outreach. The goal was to create a mark that visually unified these initiatives while maintaining clarity and scalability.

Zeitgeist is known for supporting local farmers, independent artists, and inclusive community initiatives. The challenge was to translate this multidimensional identity into a single cohesive form while preserving authenticity and approachability. The project also required a hand-drawn animation component that brought the logo to life.

Sketch/Progress

The process began with brain mapping the brand’s three core branches — Restaurant, Arts, and Community — to better understand its values and impact. From there, I explored iconography that could merge these ideas within the structure of the letter “Z.”

I experimented with simplified visual symbols and tested how they could function structurally rather than decoratively. For the animation component, I hand-drew each frame, illustrating the transformation of the letter “Z” into the fully realized logo to emphasize evolution and connection.

Design

The final logo transforms the letter “Z” into a unified symbol of the organization’s mission. The top stroke becomes a paintbrush, representing artistic expression. The diagonal center stroke forms two reaching hands, symbolizing connection and community outreach. The bottom stroke becomes a bowl with a spoon, reflecting nourishment, sustainability, and the restaurant’s commitment to fresh, local food.

Each element is integrated seamlessly into the structure of the letterform, ensuring the mark remains legible, scalable, and cohesive. The hand-drawn animation further reinforces the brand’s grassroots, community-driven identity by visually demonstrating the convergence of its three pillars into one unified system.
