Concept
This poster redesign for Life of Pi explores visual storytelling through restraint. Using a limited color palette and simplified composition, the goal was to capture the emotional depth and spiritual journey of the film without relying on literal narrative imagery.
The challenge was to distill a visually rich story into a single, striking moment, one that communicates isolation, wonder, and survival while maintaining cinematic impact.
Core themes:
Isolation and scale
Survival and resilience
Spiritual journey
Wonder and vastness
Progress
Early explorations focused on composition and balance. I tested multiple arrangements to determine how negative space could amplify the sense of solitude central to the story.
Through iteration, I refined the relationship between focal imagery and open space, allowing contrast and scale to carry the emotional weight of the design. A limited color palette was utilized to enhance clarity and mood, ensuring the composition remained bold yet restrained.
Design
The final composition synthesizes elements from several iterations into a cohesive, intentional design. Strategic use of contrast and negative space creates visual tension, while the restrained palette strengthens the emotional tone.
The result is a poster that feels cinematic yet minimal — capturing the spirit of the film through atmosphere rather than excess detail. The simplicity allows the central imagery to resonate, reinforcing the themes of endurance and introspection that define the story.
The overall identity captures:
Atmosphere
Isolation
Restraint
Cinematic depth
